Circuit 15
Beware the Kenya & Tanzania Double Circuit Safari
As the interest in Kenya and Tanzania grows and many more travellers look to the two countries in combination as their dream safari, it is important that we address one of the most common mistakes safari-seekers make. There are usually two ways of doing a Kenya & Tanzania safari, a single-circuit or double-circuit option, let's take a look at why this is an essential consideration in choosing your dream safari.
With the countless number of tour operators offering a large amount of choice in safaris, knowing the difference between a single and double-circuit safari is very important.
Most tour operators will offer a classic double-circuit safari, often of a 15 day duration. Single-circuit safaris are generally a 14 day duration. Clients who are not aware of the difference will often make the mistake of assuming a longer trip mean better value. This is the one of the most common mistakes that clients make and it can mean a lot to the enjoyment of their trip.
So what is the difference?
A double-circuit safari is classically defined as a circuit which usually runs 7 days in Kenya with a loop which is Nairobi to Nairobi, moving northwest and concluding coming southeast. The clients are then asked to spend a night in Nairobi and the next day transferred to Arusha in Tanzania and again undertake a 7 day circuit, moving west and returning east to Arusha. Below is an example of a trip by a major tour operator which conducts just such a safari.
Sounds fine doesn't it? Well no, not really. What you are actually doing is helping that company save money. The trip returns clients to Nairobi and then down to Arusha because of two reasons:
1. Avoiding use of two vehicles - Generally the same vehicles are not used in Kenya and Tanzania, so if you want to cross from Kenya to Tanzania directly, you essentially need to send an extra vehicle up from Arusha with a driver alone to receive the clients on the other side of the border. Taking clients back to Nairobi avoids having to do this.
2. Taking advantage of modular safaris - The use of two circuits means that the tour company can essentially sell three safaris out of one double-circuit. A 7 day Kenya safari circuit, a 7 day Tanzania safari circuit and a 15 day double-circuit Kenya and Tanzania safari. This means the tour operator can take advantage of selling more clients on more options, at your enjoyment cost.
So why is this such a big deal? Well, the total extra distance driven on just such a double-circuit is no less than 900 kms and adds over 13 hours of extra driving to your itinerary, not to mention an extra night in Nairobi. Remember roads in East Africa can be quite bumpy and rough, so this is a concern!
The single-circuit safari instead allows clients to cross directly from the Masai Mara in Kenya to the Serengeti in Tanzania, avoiding the need to backtrack and removing significant driving from your itinerary. Take for example our 14 day Kiboko Safari, detailed by the Google map below.
It is a cost to tour operators to invest in this option since they are required to carry extra vehicles to the borders, but this small investment can mean a significant amount to the enjoyment to the safari for clients.
So when considering your trip to East Africa, be aware of this small, but important detail as it's just one thing that will leave you happier, and certainly your back will thank you for eliminating nearly 1000 kms of bumpy East Africa roads!
Happy safari seeking! Chris.
