Fire Extinguishers - They Are Not All The Same
It is very common that someone in the market for fire extinguishers will buy the improper class of extinguisher for the specific type of fire they are trying to protect themselves against. There are some distinct factors to consider when purchasing fire extinguishers. You should decide the type of fire that you are preparing for and the class of the fire extinguisher that is made for that type of fire.Fire Extinguishers come in 5 classes: A, B, C, D, and K.
If a material leaves ash after burning, this will usually fall into the Class A Fire Extinguisher category. Examples of this material include wood and paper goods, cloth and clothes, rubber and many plastics. The Class A Fire Extinguisher is distigushed by the green triangle with the letter A in the center and a diagram of a garbage can with flaming wood inside. The A Classification of this extinguisher can be associated with the word “ash”.
Class B Fire Extinguishers are specifically for extinguishing ignited liquids like engine fuels and other similar flammable liquid chemicals. The Class B Fire Extinguishers can be recognized by having red square with a letter B in the middle of it and a diagram of a burning puddle of liquid. It’s easy to associate the letter “B” with the word “Barrel” as in “barrel of liquid”.
Class C Fire Extinguishers are for extinguishing electrical fires. The most common electrical fire often includes electric motor fires, circuit breaker fires, outlet and switch box fires etc… You can recognize a this type of extinguisher by the blue circle with a letter C in the center and the image of a burning outlet and electrical plug. remember the word “Current” to remind you what the “C” stands for in this classification.
The Class D Extinguisher is for putting out burning metal and metal alloys. Magnesium, potassium, titanium, sodium and many other flammable metals are other good examples of flammable metals. Since this is a very hot fire, water will react intensely and definitely should not be used. The Class D utilizes a dry powder to put out such fires and can be spotted by the yellow star with a letter D in the middle and diagram of a gear.
Lastly, the Class K Fire extinguisher is commonly utilized to handle fires in the kitchen. These fires are generated by flammable cooking oils, fats, and grease. The label on the Class K Fire Extinguisher has an image of a burning frying pan.
Fire Extinguishers can be purchased with a singular rating or a combination, like ABC.
Choosing the right firefighter tools and class of fire extinguishers depending on the source of the fire danger is very important. Inspecting fire extinguishers on a regular basis is definitely recommended.
