Ways to minimise fire risk from down lighters with LED bulbs
A brief introduction to the halogen downlighter
2 decades ago the halogen downlighter became very desired and homeowners fitted them in numerous rooms in their houses. Many homeowners called in the handyman to drill 80mm diameter holes spaced at precise distances all over their ceilings and fitted downlighters and halogen bulbs with purpose made low voltage circuits. The halogen bulbs produce a whitish blue ambiance generally with very high intensity so as to light up every corner of the room. This high brightness illumination was in fact perfect for kitchen preparation areas and other work areas where awesome visual definition was important. Because of the fact that the installation entailed drilling large holes all over the ceiling, these installations have stood the test of time, but not through beauty but more because the excessive cost of filling the holes and plastering is prohibitively high. It could not have been foreseen that LED bulbs would later be a partial saviour of this situation.
Why should these halogen bulbs cause a fire risk?
There are 2 reasons why the halogen bulb can be a fire risk.
Firstly the halogen buld is of relatively miniature proportions and high wattage for its light output level which means consequently it will radiate high levels of heat in contrast to LED bulbs which are for more efficient. The resultant high heat output does undoubtedly bring with it a risk of fire unless the relevant safety measures are adhered to.
The second reason is because of the method of installation of these light bulb. The halogen down light will be installed in a hole in the ceiling which is actually exposed within the space between the floors or to the actual loft space. As described earlier the halogen bulb does get exceedingly hot and through this installation method this high heat level is now concentrated into a very small area. The halogen spot is customarily fitted to an area with loft of floor void insulation which means that the possibility of cooling through flowing air is very limited.
The combination of these two factors means that there is a fire risk which can be minimised using LED bulbs.
Precisely why would the use of LED bulbs minimise fire danger?
LED Bulbs are extremely efficient. As an example a 3W MR16 bulb will create the same output as a 25W standard halogen bulb. The improved technology implicit within LED bulbs results in the fact that more electrical power is converted to light and as a consequence less power is turned into waste heat. The practical consequence of this is that you can easily touch a LED bulb as it only gets slightly hot in contrast to the halogen which would burn your fingers. The obvious consequence of this is that you can locate LED bulbs in closed spaces with considerably less likely hood of fire break out than with a standard halogen spot light. LED Bulbs are very energy efficient which is well known but it is these additional payoffs like the reduced fire risk which can be overlooked and are in fact potentially more significant. The icing on the cake is that LED bulbs have a much longer life which decreases landfill and the improved efficiency reduces your carbon footprint making them the perfect eco choice.
